Your Excuses
“When you know what you want and you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to get it.” –Jim Rohn
The difference between wishing or dreaming and achieving is the level at which you want it. One of the reasons you have not reached your goals yet is that you have not checked yourself to determine if you truly want them. Clarifying your want – your heart’s desire – is the first step toward getting it.
“…the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person… is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” – James 1:7-8 NIV edited
Your Choices Reveal Your True Want
You wish to lose weight or dream of looking and being fit. Then you choose at almost every turn to put things in your body that are in the direct opposite direction of your goal. You choose to hit the snooze button instead of getting up and working out. You choose to stay up way to late and not get the sleep your body needs to live in a healthy position.
Your choices reveal what you really want. You want to eat and drink what you enjoy instead of what is healthy. You want to avoid the gym. You want to be a night owl. Decision point by decision point, your immediate want is more important to you than your long-term want. You want these things more than health or you would be making different choices.
“A man with nothing to fight for quickly becomes a frustrated man, often without a clue as to why.” – Craig Groeschel
Willing to Fight for It
If you want something bad enough, you have got to be willing to fight for it. You will never get it if you don’t. You want a healthy relationship but find yourself in conflict with your spouse, boss, child, family member, neighbor, or church leader. A courageous conversation needs to be had. Instead of fighting for the relationship and stepping into the courageous conversation it needs for reconciliation, you hope it will all just go away on its own.
If what you want is worth fighting for, you will find a way to achieve that goal. You will lean into the fear that has you stuck and find your power to get into action. Begin by fighting on your knees in prayer asking God to be with you and guide your path.
If you want it bad enough to fight for it, you will find a way. Get into action by courageously setting up your first session with a coach, counselor, pastor, spiritual director, or doctor. Your action might be to discover hacks that will give you better chances to eat healthy, make it to the gym, or get the sleep your body is craving.
Finding a Way or an Excuse
You will either find a way or find an excuse. Your excuses will tell on your heart. They point to what you really want more than what you are saying you want. Excuses are contagious. They spread from blowing it one time to blowing it every time. The excuse you allow in your life diminishes your will so that other unrelated goals now become easier to find excuses for.
