Stop Playing Small

We’ve all had moments where we shrink back from opportunities, choosing comfort over challenge, safety over growth. Why do we do this? Why do we play small in life? It often stems from fear—fear of failure, rejection, or the discomfort that comes with stepping into something new. We stick to what we know because venturing into the unknown feels risky.

But here’s the hard truth: playing small doesn’t protect us—it limits us. We might think we're staying safe, but in reality, we’re running from our potential. The longer we avoid stepping into the bigger, bolder version of ourselves, the more we miss out on living a life full of purpose and meaning.

So, how can we stop playing small?

3 Practical Tips to Stop Playing Small

  1. Identify What You're Running From
Ask yourself, “What am I afraid will happen if I step up?” Is it fear of failure? Embarrassment? Loss of control? Naming your fear is the first step to overcoming it. Once it's in the open, it loses some of its power over you.
  2. Embrace Discomfort
Growth is uncomfortable, and that’s okay. The discomfort you feel is part of the process. Start small by intentionally stepping into situations that push your boundaries. It could be taking on a new project at work or having a tough conversation you've been avoiding. Each time you do, you’re training yourself to handle more.
  3. Surround Yourself with Support
You’re not meant to do this alone. Find a community or coach who will challenge you and call you to step into your potential. People who will encourage you when you want to shrink back and hold you accountable when it gets tough.
